Top Fundraising Trends for Nonprofits in 2022
3 min to read ✭ Learn about the top fundraising trends for nonprofits in 2022 and how to stay ahead of them for a successful jumpstart to the year.
In 2021, the ability to adapt to the fundraising trends for nonprofits across the sector really went to show how able nonprofits are. Nonprofits grew and evolved with virtual everything, new donors experiences, and almost constant privacy updates. Despite the challenges we all faced, we saw that our nonprofit partners raised more year-over-year in 2021. We learned that in order to continue this MOMENTUM, we have to continue offering the tools and resources that allow nonprofits to essentially fundraise completely online. This means more innovation, more adaptability, and more technology!
So obviously that is our takeaway, but how are you going to adapt to the fundraising trends for nonprofits in 2022? Here are our predictions for 2022 trends and how to stay ahead of them.
1. Recurring giving
Recurring giving is one of those fundraising trends that we mention a lot and push our partners to implement. According to our research, 52% of millennials are more likely to give over a longer period of time and 45% of worldwide donors are enrolled in a recurring giving program according to Double the Donation. Recurring givers are 3 – 5x more valuable than a one-time donor.
We live in a subscription-based world. Seriously, how many subscriptions are you paying each month? Based on this we can see that this is the trend for the future. Making recurring giving more available so that other 55% of worldwide donors see the benefit in joining your recurring giving program will be one of the most important things you do as a nonprofit fundraising professional in 2022.
2. Virtual nonprofit fundraising is here to stay
We have started saying, virtual everything. In 2020-2021, we had no choice but to have fully virtual events. Although virtual fundraising and events will still be an option in 2022, nonprofit hybrid events will start being more and more implemented. Adapting to this with the right fundraising toolkit to run hybrid events is more than necessary. Nonprofits, if they haven’t already, need to learn how to launch and market a successful virtual event.
Feed two birds with one hand by recording these events and using them as a way to market across all channels, keep donors engaged, and encourage community.
Using an omnichannel approach for your fundraising will also be important here. Video is still king, which means that youtube could be a great way to engage your communities, gather more interested donors, and fundraise like a boss!

3. Donating Made Easier
The top nonprofits will be making donating easier and more automized. With digital wallets, Google Pay, Apple Pay, Venmo, cryptocurrency, etc., donors will be able to give faster and easier. It is important that when fundraising for your nonprofit, you will offer at least one of these options for your donors. The more options you have, the more likely they are to give. 55% of donors are more likely to give if they have the option to use Venmo or PayPal.
There was a 1,000% increase with crypto-giving to nonprofits in 2021. It is one of the biggest nonprofit fundraising trends of 2022. Donation platforms like the Giving Block are already leveraging the power of giving with crypto and expecting that nonprofits will get on board and offer their donors to give with crypto.
4. Nonprofit fundraising trends combatting privacy updates
With Apple’s New Privacy Updates, donors will be able to opt out of ap/website tracking. We have learned that losing the tracking ability will naturally decrease the ability for remarketing audiences. However, with Conversions API, aggregated events, and on-platform acquisitions, and retargeting, you will have even more accurate data and better conversion rates with your Facebook and Instagram Ads. The top fundraising trends for nonprofits will align with these updates and make fundraising easier and more accurate.
We look at this as a good thing. Donors should have control over what they are exposed to and this gives your nonprofit an opportunity to get to know your audience better by using more personalization. In the end, donors will see what they truly want to see and will be more likely to give to your cause.
Nonprofit fundraising trends recap
Overall, nonprofits will continue to adapt and fundraise according to the trends in 2022. To do this, you will:
- Build recurring giving programs and donors
- Utilize virtual and hybrid fundraising events
- Automate donating with new options like apple pay, paypal, crypto-giving, etc.
- Get in touch with donors and give them the option on how they want to donate and how they want to be engaged with.
Online fundraising that prioritizes the donor experience and pays attention to the audience’s needs will be the first to succeed in this evolving fundraising world. We don’t expect the year will be perfect but if your nonprofit implements some of these actionable tips we can plan for a successful 2022.
We look forward to the new year!
